Half listening to voices from the radio
voices from a world away
speaking of navigation,
of magnetic poles and compasses,
I start a journey,
a journey of stillness
and great distances.
Voices recede replaced
by rushing beating wings.
My head and my wandering heart
fill with migrating birds,
birds of arctic ice and silence,
night birds gliding among shadows,
small birds gathering in clouds
certain in their flight and journeying.
I have no wings, no maps or memories,
only a feeling for the west
and the touch of rain on my face.
