A Peregrine Falcon Over Sandfields
On a cloudless afternoon
probably a female, by its general bulk
although relative size is notoriously hard to discern
when you’re staring up into the blue.
When we were kids we’d suck the nectar
from the little white dead-nettle flowers
slowly stripping the bank outside the school
as we’d wait for the bus: always late.
Now she flicks her hair out of her eyes, tells me:
Power can not be abused.
Power is abuse.
And then, in a darker tone:
You too will walk
through the wood where all wear horns.
