Waiting
We wait and we wait, but nothing happens.
Only the names are called from time to time:
Edith Green, Nellie Wigley, Margaret Smith.
Someone moves from this room to another,
from a seat in here to a seat in there.
We wait and nothing happens, but we wait.
Alan Brown. A distant call from from the depths.
Alan Brown. The name, at last, finds its owner.
Violet Whittaker, Margery Oldroyd.
Only the children are happy, causing
their chaos with new found friends.
Nothing happens, but we wait and we wait.
We get a chance to observe all the staff,
mostly, how they walk - brisk and important.
Richard Buttering, Paul White, Wendy Cleeves.
Someone stirs, mistaking the name for hers.
Irritation. Wendy Cleeves. It’s eleven o’clock.
We wait and we wait, but nothing happens.
David Hargreaves, Ian Bould … Wendy Cleeves.
