Annie
She dusted down the days for him,
the shining hours entrapped in glass,
and every second stored within
those secret corners of the mind
since John had left her far behind.
Not lost, but in another space
amoeba – like he moved with her
adjusting to a slowing pace
of age, that curse of all mankind
condemned to follow on behind.
From lofty shelf to scented drawer
his likeness caught in celluloid
smiled up at her, and such rapport
would for an instant make her blind
to grief and tragedy behind.
She whispered sorrow, sang the light
for him, then planted rosemary
to smother ugly weeds of night –
the noxious and unwelcome kind
of greenery. Bereft, behind,
dependent on a glowing sun,
she drifted like the palest moon.
Could two be melded into one,
eclipse, and suitably aligned,
at last look forward, not behind?
