I alone possess the key
Dearest
I write to tell of an event
witnessed quite by chance.
As you know, many artists and bohemian types
congregate at sunset round the central Place,
it is cooler then, the sound of church bells
competing with pigeons’ wings
and the chatter from cafe tables.
I sat alone, timing my drinks as
slowly as this desert thirst allows
and my attention was drawn to a couple;
he mid-thirties, respectable,
the other a boy of seventeen,
dissolute and beautiful.
An ochre light played against
the spectra of sunlit alcohol;
the words and images mixed
in meanings clear and impossible.
There is a mirror
and I will look in it once,
sensing another who is
me and cannot speak.
If his voice is not transcribed
I will stay always unheard.
Didn’t you know I have a twin?
I often forget I’m incomplete.
I am another;
I is another, the poet said.
