The Boar Sword
What’s that Miss?
The ginger kid again.
They’re all at grammar school, but kids
won’t read - no keys to press, they’re stymied.
Swords and guns. More swords
more guns, safe in glass cabinets.
I peer where he’s pointing. It’s a sword
with two cross bars - one at the hilt and one
much further down, a rod across the blade.
Boar sword the label reads. The second bar
keeps hunter at safe distance from the beast.
Wicked! he says. I stare right through the blade.
I wish there had been something
to stop me getting in so very deep
in that last chase.
