Editorial
Castalia is the name of that fount in the hill's fold,
the sea below,
narrow beach.
Ezra Pound, Canto XC
Greek poetry has been the spring of the most enduring poetry of Europe. When Virgil points Homer out to Dante, as the shades of the poets come before his eyes, he says, Quelli e Omero, poeta sovrano and in our century, to turn to Agenda's founder, the most memorable of Ezra Pound's Cantos are suffused with Greek beauty and magical Mediterranean light. In this our fortieth anniversary year, it gives me great pleasure to devote two issues to Greek poetry and I express my gratitude to David Connolly for his expert editing and for the masterly translations he and others have made.
English poetry has been constantly enriched from its beginnings by the art of translation. I hope our readers will share my excitement in listening both to the 'New Voices' here presented and to the 'Ancient Echoes' — the former open a new world of living literature.
We close this number with a review supplement and it is fitting that this should begin with N.K. Sandars' review of Peter Levi's most recent collection of poems (Reed Music, Anvil Press) as it was Levi who edited our first Greek issue exactly thirty years ago.
Finally, I wish to thank the many people and organisations who have made this issue possible, in particular Dr. Victoria Solomonidis of the Greek Embassy, the Hellenic Foundation, the Foundation for Hellenic Culture and the Arts Council of England.
