Ann Alexander
Now we have breaking of hearts
The big man reads the words
buckles and slumps. Howls
in the space her clothes have left
behind. He pesters her friends.
Feels her slip away with the day,
somehow already lost. She, lost,
unravels the strange town,
counts her change,
considers takeaway. Buys wine.
The man rattles around
the big house, cleans and closes rooms.
Drains wine. She pays for her room,
moves on. Makes ends, counts costs.
He thinks of endings. She
considers meetings, thinks again.
Remembers acts of kindness.
Counts her friends.
The shrunk man spoons cold soup.
Lives small. She aches to the bone.
Neither can remember why,
or how, it ended, or began,
or if at all.
