the news said
Ingeborg Bachmann had died
in a Roman hospital
blood nourishment had been sent out to her
by her countrymen
to assist in the painful hours
of keeping someone alive
In Vienna the sun shined
and a permissive wind swayed
leaves trees autos together
there was the obituary note
on the radio and the
hommages
IN MEMORIAM
to a successful Austrian writer
to a body burnt down
by cruelty
and aloneness
a body carefully built
and once
charged with a million megawatts
now all water drained out
motionless
No comfort was decreed in her last days
only a continuous denial on the part
let us say of the Gods
After the wind shook some more leaves away from the chestnuts
a Händel Sonata for Blocklöte and guitar was played
for the freunde of alter musik
further
space was required for waves of time
for Cairo and Tel Aviv reports on the war
for "war is not declared anymore, simply continued."
