rooms
The few factories are closed;
their histories stand about me,
floors and walls, the street
contained and ending in them.
The window shows me this, the way
I came, room after room, word
after word; each move a life,
a minute death. The shells remain
as buildings might remain, the warehouses
I pass each day. Small roots have broken
into the disused shafts and platforms.
The whole street has been condemned
and this house too, this room.
