From: The Yellow Darkness of Van Gogh (1995)
Of the Master-Builder
a black firmament, so they could build
the invisible undisturbed.
Feverishly they work
— that dawn may find them
keys in hand —
bricklayers in Scorpio,
blacksmiths in Ursa
Minor and Major joiners in the distant Pleiades
how the invisible will be
none of us know
perhaps open-plan, probably airy
with no party walls
for the faithless to eavesdrop
and how will the foundations be secured
without a single sacrifice?
I hear the noise of the builders and hope
the Master-builder has planned
a hollow space under the rocks
with a boundless view
of the visible.
