Recurrent self-identification
Before the TV screen, dim ancestry
The hum of cool applause, ghost writers’ claque.
Damned stream of consciousness, years of which rag.
Further, the machine’s humming insulates
One in hygienic past, tearing a strip
Off their lives’ papering, guaranteed
‘We cannot win’, clinical mode:
Sere, tatty information is purveyed,
Adverts for corsets, patent medicine.
Technology has all in hand today,
Bypassed chronology of this back room,
The stream of traffic flashes faster still.
