Work
A neighbour tells me that her son
is about to embark on a period
of work experience, and I smile
and say that I first went to work
when I was sixteen, and it was
an experience I never did
get to enjoy. She looks at me
as if I’m odd, clearly thinking
I ought to be in favour of work
and the rewards it brings.
I reflect on my years working
and the hole in the sole of my shoe.
