A Proposal
Blame it, then, on last night’s beer:
my loud breakfast-voice alarming
fear in a small boy’s eyes. Nothing
surprises, but the voice enlarged and
rising like an early-morning wail.
Later, I’ll carry that pale face
around my person, shell-framed in regret
and looking like an icon I have broken.
Now that it’s too late, I see the hard lines
I have scratched upon another person’s God.
Nothing I can do will change a thing.
Tonight I’ll buy a bar of chocolate that
is too expensive and too cheap by far.
Tomorrow another battle will begin.
Dear God, accepting that you cannot win
without my intervention, can’t we, as
fathers, settle for a non-aggression pact?
