Easter Monday
An enormous chocolate egg surrounds the day,
its pieces cheap and gritty to the teeth; we look out
through cellophane, company with the yellow cotton chicks.
Outside, it rains: we see the splashes covering the sky,
hear it swish on an indian file of motor cars which climbs the hill.
Nothing happens. Football games are played by a man on wireless;
the yellow cotton chicks will not keep still, but deafen us with cheeping.
Tomorrow the egg will be eaten, the chicks laid dead in a pile
of paper straw. In another year the tomb will have been found
empty, and we will be back home again with rain and yellow cotton chicks.
