For an Enormous Lady
It’s the size of his loss,
the space he still leaves in the bed,
the holes which appear round the house,
in the form of silence,
in her shape traced onto the sofa,
in her everyday thoughts
he could once see arrive.
There are no sudden bowls of fruit,
flowers don’t arrive by themselves,
the fridge empty of creamy desserts.
The whims, the fads, the health food,
carrots, if she could eat carrots
instead of chocolate perhaps?
He still visits the same places,
the Saturday afternoon ritual,
the bookshop, the craft shop, the market,
but look how small he is now,
less shopping, less her,
see how tiny a man can become
on a diet of one.
