Sunflower Strip
Never sown a seed before
nor grown a blade of grass
intentionally, just cut the stuff
cursing nature,
but the flakey nuts given out
like smarties by WEA Annie
on some course for lonely sods
were pushed into the ground
like rushed bodies
after a lonely funeral.
Chucked a bucket of water
into that corner once a while
and up she shoots like something
Jack’s stroppy mother dropped
out of a picture book window.
Stems thick as wrists, green
as dreams, flowers drawn
by wild kids with crayons.
Gold records, psychedelic daisies
dominating the stage like Screaming
Jay Hawkins: hot, exotic:
nodding coded messages eroding
moral fibre and exploding.
Blowing away grey walls.
