Propaganda in the Shopping Precinct
Here at last, the salesmen;
they were certain to come
to rouse the unemployed.
The brass band plays with military precision,
loud, exciting, none of your National Anthem.
Smiling people quicken their step.
But round the corner, near the overhead toilets,
the hardware’s parked. The ground-to-air
this-that-and-the-other, with explanatory cards.
The missiles look so small and tidy,
all British racing green. No blood on anything
(the helicopter pilot’s an empty suit).
Meanwhile, outside Fine Fare, the band plays on,
their uniforms deceptively old-fashioned,
like Trumpton fire-brigade’s,
and the shoppers clap.
