Duncairn Gardens
At the junction of Duncairn Gardens
and North Queen’s Street the broken glass
shines like sharp frost in my headlights
these mornings. Police Landrovers balance
on the pavements where the rough edges
of communities meet,
pelted at night with broken bricks
in confrontations so routine
that the early morning news ignores them,
detailing roadworks instead.
The red-brick, three-storey houses climb
the hill; lives tolerated behind
the fine wire mesh on windows, livings made
warily in the shops that survive. Tiger’s Bay
and the New Lodge meet in the hard stare
of grey breeze-blocks that seal deserted houses.
