The Poet Said to the Poet
(for Franklin Reeve)
As dawn cracked like a soft boiled egg
across the table of the Atlantic
you looked at me
questioning
and the parsley overspilled into the sink,
I ran to finish washing it.
Downstairs, even now,
the parsley waits in the sink
along with the lettuce.
The red and white currants march
towards the saucepan.
Your eyes follow me
questioning.
It’s all right
the conversation still lives in the last
sun glimmer from the garden,
it lives because the hand at the plough
cannot falter.
The flight of a sparrow through the banqueting hall
was what I meant -
the bright lights, noise, the confusion
is enough -
the window into the night stands ajar.
My arms lock around your eyes
to reassure.
At this minute we comprehend everything.
The ash tree and the weeping willow form an ark
which you glimpse from the veranda of your house.
It is all so much nearer than we thought.
