Editorial
Brando's Hat was launched in 1990, as an occasional magazine, by Steven Waling, one of the current editors. Now with its adoption by Tarantula Publications, it becomes a thrice yearly publication (February/March, June/July, October/November). It will be devoted exclusively to poetry, and will feature poets rather than individual poems.
Each issue will feature a number of poets, who will be represented by a group or sequence of poems. This will also allow for the inclusion of long poems, as in this issue, where we publish Mandy Precious' Risen, which was written for and performed at the Huddersfield Poetry Festival. We also include five poems from Jane Holland's intriguing Umbra sequence.
As this is our first issue, it was our intention to introduce the editors by including a selection of work from each, but as this would take up too much of the magazine's space, we have decided to introduce ourselves in instalments. In this issue, we have a group of poems from Emma-Jane Arkady and the opening poems of Seรกn Body's sequence on early Irish emigration to Manchester during the cotton industry boom. In our next edition, we will feature work by Angela Topping and translations by Steven Waling from the French of Apollinaire.
