From: Superga is Waiting (1987)
Superga is Waiting
of our youthful years
lost to the general indifference
they go to find their friends who
are waiting on Superga
lost these Icari in their aeroplanes
— for just a second before the crash
confusion on their faces —
lost our friends our relations
set sail for secret seas
we are lost alas and silent
are mindful of the brilliant
happy days that were ours
and weep)*
* The hill of Superga is close to Turin. On the afternoon of 4 May 1949, in thick fog, a Fiat G-212 plane carrying the city's football team from a friendly match in Lisbon struck the Superga Basilica on the hilltop and crashed, with the result that all thirty-one passengers lost their lives.
