Aunt Margaret's Ashes
According to Dad,
that’s what she wanted –
our garden, not a cemetery
no one would visit.
Her ashes are heavy
in the maroon urn
Dad lets me hold it
but he carries it to the place,
and I stare as a shower
of grey-white grit
fills up the hole
in the frozen ground.
But at least it was calm
and she doesn’t blow out,
stick to my new fleece jacket
or fly in my face.
We all stand there
till Dad is ready
to scoop up a trowl-full of earth,
cover each speck of her.
