A couple would have been enough
but three pairs, plump, companionable,
fossicking among the raspberry canes,
the rusty sorrel, their soft piping
a conversation rather than a song.
Three muted pinks, three rosy corals
that picked and fussed below my window
for nearly fifteen minutes, took off
across the garden, six black heads, white rumps
dipping over the apple tree, turning
what could have been the worst of days
into the sharp and solid present.
