Margaret Miller
Once a Year
It happens down inside the tunnel
made by bending thorn, when
the sun shines down in little points,
then disappears.
If the green light’s right
as I go in,
it dissolves the parsley stems
until there’s nothing there
but bits of white lace
hanging in the air.
Then these, too, disappear
into a green so deep they cannot grow at all.
But downhill, where the hawthorn ends
and the sunlight reaches in,
the bits of lace appear again, to tremble
on invisible stems.
They spread out into the field in stillness
and silence, except for the bees.
I wait all year for this.
To see it end again, in flowers.
