Death of a Kodak girl, stolen from outside a chemists
A hot summer with searing light
flattening and over exposing
when I saw them
standing together on brown grass
in the small park.
He was swaddled in filthy layers
over greasy bandages of trouser,
beard and hair matted
into a lopsided helmet,
one hand around her tiny waist
dirty finger plugging
the pucker of her belly button.
She was bikini clad,
pin up glamorous and a golden
tan all the way down
to her neatly varnished beach toes.
Raised arms held a small towel
behind her laughing blonde head
which urged me to use
Kodak film on my holidays,
and here is the image
twenty years later
superimposed at the end of the day
when, retracing my steps,
I saw her scattered, her body
torn to furious pieces and left
like confetti for the twilight.
