Jan Porter
Wheels
Roads bump memory;
the khaki trucks -
dark tumbrels
pounding bitter tracks.
Like cattle crushed,
they stare through wooden slats.
Waving or entreating,
hands reach out,
palm hope.
Luggage left behind
in worlds where children laughed,
the chambers danced with light.
Departing ghosts,
your voices
must not fade
but echo deep as guilt.
