Absence
Dust drifts about,
Feathers the floor and skirting-boards,
Blows unnoticed through the silent house.
Down long, deserted corridors,
the shrouded furniture
crouches in corners,
dimly reflects in mottled mirrors
that endlessly reflect themselves.
Evening,
as darkness edges slowly in,
forlorn within the fireplace,
the empty grate waits to be filled -
piled high again with fresh new logs.
Pale green dawn,
as light slides in,
the windows open sleepy lids,
stare out across the frosty fields -
And wait.
