Only when you tear off on your travels
can I properly consider what it is
that’s kept us happy all these months.
That is, beyond the staple of our groins
and the lavishing of glue down the spine
of our bed. And now, like History, your
absence makes you clearer, writes a stream
of text across your page which, since you left,
has opened out from mine. I think it
must be words, Clare; how we speak beyond
the covers, and the way our words concur
and yet won’t perfectly translate.
