Something To Do With
not getting round to going to see
the dream cottage she bought
after they separated but doesn't live in
because it's in the middle of nowhere
and she doesn't drive
and anyway she lives with Dennis now
sending a jigsaw of the Mona Lisa for her birthday
which had 1000 pieces nearly all dark
calling my daughter Joy after my mother-in-law
not being pregnant after she'd gone to
all that trouble of us having to get married
snogging her best friend's husband on New Year's Eve
when I was fifteen and she was expecting to snog him
because her best friend was off snogging dad somewhere
getting her into a state again
giving her one of her heads
having to wait till my father gets home
him losing his rag
slapping my legs till she had to tell him to stop
not eating the blackcurrant jelly her mother-in-law
brought for my bad cold as a peace offering
when they hadn't been speaking
bursting her appendix getting born
hanging on in there with her on the pillion
after he'd got her into trouble and she'd got him
to ride over every rough track in the neighbourhood
knowing this
