Dancing In The Dark
To the Tower Ballroom without a partner,
dancing alone, but recalling each pulse.
Less irksome than to shunt an unfamiliar
dodgy hip around the polished floor.
One flesh, oblivious to the idle glance
he floats across the room,
coming here often to renew promises.
Unable now to sit one out with tired feet
or escape to the bar, perhaps to lose
the fading beat, the time he’s keeping.
Up through the floor the console rises.
Lights. Music. Curtains.
I smile and push my partner into
a reluctant rumba. Two basics,
then pretend to stamp on cockroaches.
Never do anything on the 1 beat unless
it’s to slide with style into the side step,
hold her tenderly, pretend to be in love.
