Spending Power
I went straight to the Ku’damm,
bought myself a black leather jacket,
a smart pair of dark woollen trousers,
two crisp white Oxford shirts,
three ties and fashionable leather shoes.
You can forget your West German goods!
I’ve been snapping up old Eastern stock.
Look at this lovely warm winter coat.
Ten Deutschmarks - an absolute bargain.
I’ve bought few real luxuries so far:
fresh juicy peaches and nectarines
and nicely wrapped West German bread.
I’m always wary of our bread.
You never know who else has touched it.
I’ve bought plenty of paper -
lots of good quality white A4
and carbons and typewriter ribbons,
brown envelopes of all sizes too.
It was never easy before.
I’ve been on a real binge I’m afraid:
a Schneider colour television,
remote control, thirty nine channels;
a Philips video recorder
to get up to date with what I’ve missed.
My job’s safe but the wife’s might not be.
I’m trying to stop all this spending
but it’s very difficult to save
when everything’s so new and enticing.
