tiny monkey, Bungo Wattney, begins a small poetry pamphlet for him and his friends in the Mongo Kaftan woods, just south of Norgrampton. the pamphlet makes them laugh, it makes them
smile, it makes the world seem brighter. none of the weasels read
the pamphlet, and the friends are glad.

the more excited everyone becomes, the more Bungo and his pals
start to think of other things they can do: soon the forest is alive
with arts projects, plays, films, and everyone is cheering and
smiling ; occasionally dirty, but always content. this is so much fun
that occasionally Bungo forgets to print the pamphlet, and other animals, particularly those who live outside the woods, start to
wonder where the pamphlet is.

but it always gets there in the end. one day, Geoff Weasel starts a
war, but a long way away in several foreign forests. Bungo and his
friends, not really being in any immediate danger, are cross with
Geoff, and wish he would go away. maybe he will, one day soon.

Bungo has been feeling a bit odd this year, he tells me over a
coffee in The Moon Under Water. he will try better to send the
pamphlet to the other forests, he says. i pat him on his furry little
head, and tell him that it doesn’t matter, even though it
sometimes does. the important thing is that he and his friends are
happy, and that he tries his best. and he does, i know.
