she hears warpt floorboards creak
feels draught of lift cover
me settling in
sees thro lids lite hazing
peers, smiles
feels me
reach.
& when she sleeps
i read outloud ‘trout fishing in america’
to lull her dreams
she keeps arms under covers
her chin
the quilt
two fists
we meet our cheeks
& warmth sticks
she turns
& kisses
she rolls from me
uniformly i follow
take up
her space
stretch warm where she’s been
allow
no release.
& when she sleeps
in the fleshfolds of nite
where my thumb fits the fob of her concave
waist
holsters her gunbelt
my elbow to hip…
& when she sleeps
she tries to turn back to me
i sleep
i flail
rage continuous
or
deadweight
she soothes my outbursts til i too sleep
quietly
tho i battle my dreams
she sleeps again
instantly.

me
& the cat
orbit her shape
she
radiates
offers
no resistance
to proximity.

i long to disturb her
tranquillity
plan to eat gratefully
her
