Editorial Notes
But I’m old enough to know
Old enough to understand
All these things I’ve carried here
Belong in a child’s handsLucy Kaplansky
I think if there is a theme, this issue is built around the subject of childhood. In the middle of the issue, from pages 90 - 113, is a section of children’s poetry, which I am proud to present as a part of what FIRE aims to achieve. Alongside the children’s poetry in this issue is the setting up of a children’s poetry section on the FIRE website, this will be ongoing, and further contributions of poems from children, both for the website and a possible future issue of the magazine. will be welcome.
In addition, this issue has a special interest in collaborations, translations & performance texts, including children’s collaborations. There is also a significant sprinkling of young writers on other pages than the middle section, including a short story by 15 year old Emma Lewis, poets in their late teens (Thomas Kendall, Emma McGordon, Karly Muirhead Steve Rudd, Rebecca M.Wilson, David Hoare, Abbie Todd and Tristram D.Burden) and early 20s (Steve C.Stone, Deborah Maudlin, David Adams, Cassandra Willoughby, Kerry Andrew, Darlene Wilson, Chloë Meakin & Jon Summers.) Some of these writers are new to FIRE, others appeared in no.11 and/or subsequent issues.
Acknowledgements - Lloyd Robson’s poem When She Sleeps was previously published in Poetry Wales. Chloë Meakin’s poem Because It’s There previously appeared in Acid Angel. David Adams appeared in Obsessed With Pipework with his poem Chinese Lanterns. Christopher Allan’s 4 poems have all previously been published, The Gift in Reactions No2 Anthology, Broken Lines & The Tao of the Keys in Lodestones Anthology, and Mid March in Poetry Nottingham.
The poem Let There Be No War by 8-year old Nela from Kosova appeared in the anthology Voices for Kosovo edited by Rupert Loydell and published by Stride in conjunction with Children’s Aid Direct. The collaborative poem Stars Open Among the Lilies was composed and exhibited as part of the Ledbury Festival 2000 sean burn’s voltaire choruses was a year of the artist commissioned work in 2001, (with visual artist andrew hardie), has been shown & performed widely, & published by ash.nu media, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Paul Bullock’s Marshmallow Eve & Ever Jack is a long continually expanding performance poem which has been performed throughout the East Midlands to increasing popular demand. More excerpts from this poem will appear in future issues. Likewise Words for Women are a group of women writers who have performed their collaborative text First Person Singular throughout the West Midlands.
The poems from children in Dorset have been published in the Minding the Gap anthology (East Street Poets, see book list below). An earlier version of Stephen C. Middleton’s It was so stuffy, Thelonious appeared in Stride magazine in 1987.
Anne Duden’s long poem Arbeitsplätze appeared in its original German in Stuttgart in 1988. In all these cases I am extremely grateful for permission to publish.
