Sleep
My thoughts newly raked and
untrodden like a beach
after the onset of night.
In dream her breasts look
like a capital S,
denoting a plural
in the language of things.
MARIN SORESCU, born 1936 in Oltenia, Romania. He is a playwright, essayist, translator, and writer of children’s books, as well as a poet & editor of the journal Ramuri. He has read his poems at many festivals in the West, and has also been writer in residence in both Iowa & West Berlin. There is no readily available book by Sorescu in English, but there is a strong likelihood that one will appear in the next couple of years, translated by Michael Hamburger.
MICHAEL HAMBURGER, b. 1924 Berlin, emigrated to Great Britain 1933. Celebrated as a poet and Translator, he is also a fine critic (The Truth of Poetry, Penguin 1973), and an entertaining memoirist (A Mug’s Game Carcanet, 1973). His most recent volumes are REAL ESTATE (poems, Carcanet 1977), and POEMS OF PAUL CELAN (translations - Carcanet 1980). A further critical book is expected in 1981 from the same publisher.
