Appearing Soon
Sunday walking, only, but there is something more serious
in the foreground always too close to focus on, perhaps the
whirlings of dust, the blurrings of tendrils, cells copulating.
There is only the turning, while they find the openings and
conceal their hurtings. They move on down the tracks that
bear arrows to show them the way even though lost friends
are at their heels, rows of hang-dog elms, observing without
interest, too tired for human bother. Skins. Pelts. They are
see-through, pocketing silences, wanting to forgive and
forget but still holding on to personal grievances. It is best
not to go too far, to settle for a before lunch or after lunch
walk, or if for the whole day make sure to pack food and drink.
Careful! There is poison in everything. Buds. Seeds. Leaves.
Rinses of sap. The soft landscape can turn on you just like that.
And when it rains, it will be a steady shower, making a point,
digging at their backs, singling them out, the unprepared
drowned loons falling from themselves into vapour. No
witnesses. Every fern keeping its tight, little mouth shut.
But instead of murder they find a rainbow, so close it touches
them, the power of the colours, the simple vivid pleasure of
seeing red and violet as they are meant to be and they
stop in all ways, take it in, remember they are together, still.
