A Warm Front
The underdone eyes
That hair
And all behind the day
Fledgling desires
Trailing the air
To smack us raw.
The weather has cleared enough for us to happen.
All this in an afternoon’s small talk
Grinning and gripping us tight
on the backs of sun-loungers
(£3 for the day from the ex-windsurfer who rode
a bad double header and has retired at twenty)
We skim each other
The sisters in law
Rehearsing… nothing.
At times like these it comes down to
No more than bikinis and shoes
On a scale of cheap
And as our husbands play frisbee with the children
We dissolve
Glad for the excuse of heat.
The edge of the world is just over there
By the perfect family playing cricket on the beach
Well lit with the fat lick of late sun
As a high hit ball leaves us looking on blind.
