Greene-Land
Brighton-Rock-facades bear
evening's peeling sunburn,
front slaying grounds where Pinkie,
Spicer, Cubitt rent.
Man ghosting balcony
(small hotel or private apartment
lost to dark's full dinner-dress)
echoing brittle century.
Pinkie's nemesis, Colleoni,
imbibing night's legitimate air.
Gangster's glace eyes fix our backs,
look up - only red-tipped fag.
Further on, improbable hoodlum
sports noir-trilby, car's unsteady light
revealing gun (for sale?) Spots us. Hands piece
driver-wards. Stalks off. No words.
Car shadows.
Faster we go
grateful for neon windows,
courting couples making him turn away.
Just escaping Pinkie's day,
sour as hot breathing on the face.
Quitting balcony, Colleoni
awaits report from hired guns.
