The Field
There were other fields nearby
but on the horizon, across the valley,
this field stood out, greener
than the dark surround of wood.
It lay there almost perfect,
perhaps a few docks along the hedge,
sunning itself, lapping up the light.
There were paths, even a track,
but I would be trespassing
if I got closer. I preferred keeping it
at a distance, in my mind;
sometimes I would visit
and the grass would shiver in the wind.
I would look back and make out
my grey house against the grey of sky,
too far away to see the delight
of Shasta Daisies against granite,
my face at the window looking this way.
