The Editor's Chronicle of Recent Books
Everyman's Poery has produced a fine new Sappho, edited and translated by Robert Chandler (Dent, £2). The translations have lucidity and music and the book makes an excellent companion volume to Sappho Through English Poetry, edited by Peter Jay and Caroline Lewis (Anvil Press, £7.95) which presents a more varied selection of translations and versions.
It is good to see a new edition of Michael Alexander's The Poetic Achievement of Ezra Pound (Edinburgh University Press). Free from all jargon or theorising, this is much the finest general introduction to Pound's poetry that has been written.
The most interesting and memorable poem to appear is Geoffrey Hill's Triumph of Love (Penguin Books, £8.99). Agenda will be publishing a long essay on this, by Peter Walton, in our fortieth anniversary issue in the autumn.
The rebirth of Kathleen Raine's Temenos Academy Review is welcome. It is a magazine devoted to the imagination, which is the tap root of poetry. Copies can be ordered from Central Books, 99 Wallis Road, London, E9 5LN, price £12.50 each. So far one issue has appeared and the second number will be published in May, 1999.
Another book that should not be missed is Ian Hamilton's Sixty Poems (Faber, £7.99). Hamilton has written a few poems that live in the mind; they possess, to use a phrase from his biography of Robert Lowell, 'the imaginable moral power of perfect speech'. It is also good to see the lively festschrift David Harsent has edited for Hamilton's sixtieth birthday, Another Round at the Pillars (Cargo Press, £25).
