Lychees
In a calm between two homeward squalls
we drank a clear, myrrh-scented tea, petals unfurling in our tins,
and ate lychees,
‘like peeling a brain’ laughed a boy who, next night,
on a cloudless watch,
slid overboard,
surfacing after years, in dreams
of sails, high as stars, under the slow tilt of sky,
of skins splitting, cardlike, to pale flesh,
the pips we spat,
their curious, glossy arc, into the waves.
