Sam Smith
Particles, Waves, of Electromagnetism
In the dark below graves miners bend,
chip and splinter. Black water, glimpsed
in helmet-lamp reflections, moves around
rock and rubble with the sudden quickness
of small animals. The breathed air
is heavy and damp.
Engrained hands
bring to the surface broken lumps
of metals
or of minerals
that take and shatter
into raw colour
day’s ordinary grey light.
Ideas, new thoughts,
are arcs of white light that pierce us
and the moment: particles, waves,
of electromagnetism.
