Will Daunt
To Lofoten
The islands end.
Vaeroy, a couple of spines,
strains alone
in the rhythmic swell
of memory.
There a man reels
on the main ridge
and scuffed slopes yawn.
Mosken looks anyone's village
and cowers,
with barbed wire gardens
and dropping ways.
Wracks and sheep
crowd the landing shell,
where showers of gulls
cry threats
of possible squall.
The telephone line
sags down on the track
to the settlement,
loaded like hardship.
Its hovels are largely
havens for unanswered calls.
