Wait
The Woman’s face is framed by the zaffre
painted squares of her view
across neatly clipped yards
and pavement and a road that
goes nowhere.
She waits for her son, quietly,
like so many mothers have,
resisting the day-time keeping
click of clocks or jealous pools
of tea that mark their own
time with rings
of tannin on the china.
Her world of stale air
could breathe magnolias in the
Spring or eddy with the sounds
of open windows, but today,
like any other day,
she waits in her reflection
clinging to the
arms of her favourite chair
ankles locked, feet
pushing back from the
edge going over.
