Holly Day
Haunted
You follow me through my footsteps, rise
with that terrible smile beneath each
well-placed step, asphalt rippling to mold into
something I will smash until it is dead.
I burn my lungs out with cigarette smoke
stamp cinders into your face crawling
back at me through broken glass.
You are In the trees with me
tonight, eyes like dying candles and lips
forever calling my name long after
the smoke from the shotgun blast
has cleared. I rip at green vines
smash scarlet kudza blossoms into lacerated
palms. You are so far away from me and this life
I could reach out and touch you.
