Featured poet Carrie Etter
I moved to England from the US in 2001 and hope to extend my stay indefinitely. In 2003 I received a PhD in English for my thesis on mid-Victorian fiction and early British criminology, and I teach literature and creative writing at the University of Hertfordshire as well as an online fiction course for the Open University. My poems have appeared in Metre, PN Review, Poetry Review, Reactions, and the TLS, and are forthcoming in Agenda, The Rialto and Stand. I also publish reviews, most regularly in New Welsh Review, Poetry Review and the TLS, and I am working on an ongoing collection of stories set in my hometown of Normal, Illinois, one of which will appear in New Welsh Review next year. Somewhat unusually, I work in other strains of poetry besides what, for the purpose of brevity, I call 'mainstream lyric'. I also write haiku and what is generally considered experimental verse, and I have published this work in such journals as Blithe Spirit, Presence and Snapshots (for haiku) and in Poetry Salzburg Review, Oasis and Shearsman (for experimental work). The poems included here mostly take their inspiration from my experiences in England: 'In the Last' is set on the University of Essex campus, while 'Party Game' refers to late night hilarity during an Arvon Course at Totleigh Barton in September 2002 (though parts of the poem are purely fictional). 'Omens' speaks to the sense of self-alienation I often experience on trans-Atlantic flights.
