Sonatina for French Horn and Devout Glove
She watches, bird style, to see
what the knee is saying.
The pillow she clutches soaks up pain from her chest
like a bandage.
She is monkey-minded,
and she plays a sonatina for French horn
and devout glove.
Numbers are the evil dad, the week
gone by, silent and alone.
In her dreams she finds her inner spotted cat
who comes to her red-eyed, but unharmed.
She takes him in her arms and he is her.
For the rest of the story we don't have to worry about him.
She leaves in the elevator, through the halls
which smell faintly of orange sherbet.
That night, at the beach, the sea calm,
although still somewhat numb to the sense of sand,
she swims in the starsea.
Later, lying down, her thumb is a heart handle.
She holds it, simian-like, (stares around)
as if it were a joy stick and as if
there were something she could steer with it.
