Growing Up In Florina
Too uncertain to buy the exotic,
be noticed outside, a brown hermit
in panelled halls
referring to The inferno, Star Maker,
the students' eccentric master, unreal.
Ten years old, this unharmed professor
was inventor, spy, and cyclist
racing ahead too far to stop,
or thinking to grip his handlebars,
or feel.
Two girls harbouring boldness,
aching on pale moons,
rode behind, warm-saddled,
burning wheels.
One smelt of potato peel.
The other was seafood
on a platter. She had a lisp.
Regardless of grime, the flies,
the red spiky iron railing,
the first undiminished kiss,
his scholarly mind unhinged,
led him alone to the abyss.
