Ipanema
The elder daughter orders
The younger daughter
To walk to the shop
Now that apples
Are in season
Falling all around
Rebellion sits uncoiled
On the younger daughter’s
Tongue. A pip called truth.
The younger daughter walks
To the shop, her mind
A dialogue of absent memories
Some meet for the first time
Appear out of sequence
In a preordained comeback.
At the shop she buys
A newsflash and a small forest
From another country
Where birds sing songs
In a mixture of Native
American avian dialects
Apple pie is a delicacy
In the shopkeeper’s mouth.
His ears are word register tills.
The younger daughter barters
For a piece of fresh fruit landscape.
The shopkeeper’s wood built
Shop is eaten over many
Moonlit dinners by the wild.
The elder daughter remains at home
Being responsible and envies
The younger daughter this freedom
That liberates her from housework.
Night approaches like a raven from
The land of strangers and beds call
To sleepy children
Shadows move out to bathe
Under nocturnal suns
Somewhere Brazilian bees
Drone a samba
In Ipanema the daughters know a girl.
